The spectroscopic techniques with such an instrument include non-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), that does not require a monochromatic incoming beam to excite the analyte atom, as well as resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and high energy resolution fluorescence detected (HERFD) X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. We define emission spectroscopy as measuring the emitted X-rays from a fluorescence source with an energy bandwidth that is of the order of the core hole lifetime broadening. X-ray emission spectroscopy is attracting growing interest as a tool to characterize local electronic and atomic structure. ![]()
